Taking some basic, common sense precautions will help to ensure a safe cruise vacation:

1.  Establish a buddy system when boarding a cruise ship.

2.  Never wander into dark or secluded areas alone or with strangers.

3.  Never leave a child or infant unattended.

4.  Be sure to have a “designated driver” when imbibing heavily.

5.  Do not entertain strangers alone in your state room.

6.  In ports of call, know your departure time and allow extra time to return to the ship.

7.  When going on tours, be sure another member of your party knows where you are going and when you will return.

8.  Carry your mobile phone with you when you are off the ship. Be sure to contact your wireless service provider to activate service for your ports of call.

9.  When off of the ship, be aware of your surroundings. If it ‘doesn’t feel right” don’t go there. Remember that you are not in the United States (no matter how civilized it may appear) and that different rules apply.

10. Lock the cabin and balcony doors when you are in the room.  If there is not a deadbolt then put a chair against the door.
